Peace Pole

A Journey Toward Peace

A passion for mission and quest for peace has long been an integral part of this congregation. Throughout its 125-year history Bethany has ordained many male and female clergy either to parish ministry or overseas mission. In the early 1970s the Nebraskans for Peace Lincoln Chapter was started by Rev. Carl Burkhardt, Rev. Dr. Raleigh Peterson, and Sharon Shields. A few years later Bethany Christian Church was the only Nebraska congregation to accept the challenge from the General Office of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to become a Shalom Congregation, a congregation devoted to bringing peace and justice to the world wherever possible. On Pentecost Sunday 2011, the congregation dedicated its Peace Pole which stands at the corner of North Cotner Blvd. and Alyesworth Avenue.
